FAQs

General questions (HOCl)

What is the active ingredient in all MEDI+KURIN HOCl range of products?

The active ingredient in all MEDI+KURIN HOCl range of products is Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl), which is produced via Electrolyzed Water Technology. HOCl is a non-toxic, natural germ killer that is also found produced by the white blood cells in our bodies.

How does Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) kill bacteria and viruses?

Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is the same naturally-occurring molecule produced by human white blood cells to fight invasive bacteria and viruses in the human body. The HOCl molecule kills bacteria by attacking the cell membranes, “burning” through the cell wall and flooding the cell. Once inside the cell, HOCl oxidizes biological matter, causing the cell membrane to rupture, resulting in the subsequent death of the bacteria.

Why do i smell chlorine?

Upon first use, MEDI+KURIN HOCl has a slight scent similar to chlorine, bleach or a swimming pool. This smell is actually from a by-product called chloramines, which are inactive compounds released when bacteria or virus cell membranes break down. The more frequently it is used, the fewer surviving proteins (a.k.a cell membrane material) will be available for the next disinfection. Essentially, the more you use it, the less odor there will be. Chloramines are different from chlorine, which is one of the harmful by-products from bleach. Please rest assured that MEDI+KURIN HOCl is NOT diluted bleach.

How is Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) different from bleach?/ How is MEDI+KURIN HOCl different from bleach?

While both Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) and bleach include chlorine, they have different chemical formulas and hence, different properties. Please rest assured that MEDI+KURIN is NOT diluted bleach.

Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl)= main ingredient in bleach
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) = active ingredient in MEDI+KURIN

Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) is the same substance produced by our white blood cells to fight infections, and has been found to be much more effective than bleach or even alcohol in disinfecting, without any harmful by-products. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) is most effective at a neutral pH of 5-6.5. Sodium hypochlorite/bleach exists at pH 11-13, which is highly alkaline and corrosive. When in contact with the skin or eyes, it causes irritation and potential burns. HOCl is widely used in applications where gentleness is critical such as optometry, veterinary care, and wound healing.

Is MEDI+KURIN HOCl safe if ingested?

MEDI+KURIN HOCl contains no toxic chemicals or additives, and therefore poses no harm when accidentally ingested in small amounts. Still, it is not recommended to be ingested frequently or in large amounts.

What are the applications of Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI)?

Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is commonly used for hand sanitizers, surface disinfectants, fogging or fumigation, and even as a disinfectant for washing fruit or fresh-cut vegetables.

Why don’t I find more HOCl products if their ingredients are so simple?

Only up until recently, the overwhelming drawback to its widespread use was the lack of shelf stability. HOCl reacts very easily and quickly turns back into salt and water. Now, HOCl is manufactured in a way that allows it to be stable for much longer, allowing it to be sold commercially. Secondly, the technology required to produce HOCl is relatively expensive, even when the ingredients are simply salt and water.

How long do MEDI+KURIN HOCl range of products can last?

Please refer to the dates on the product packaging. For optimal shelf life, store in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

Does MEDI+KURIN HOCl range of products contain synthetic fragrances or artificial preservaties?

No, MEDI+KURIN HOCl range of products does not contain any synthetic fragrances, alcohol, bleach, ammonia, phenols, dyes or colouring, parabens, preservatives, SLS or SLES.
